it would be cool if there were quests that granted 5 (or 2/3 under the current skill system) skill points to a specific skill. these quests could give a nice tutorial on what the skill is used in and so on. this is also a way for someone to get to put a few points in a skill to try out a system without actually devoting points to it.

example: tailoring quest
Code:
the goal of this quest would be to have someone understand the basics of tailoring. a few 'missions' must be met and then the person wins a few skill points in tailoring. the quest might work like this
mission 1:
Code:
1) go to chodaku and bring back a swatch of fabric and some thread
2) tailor a washcloth (the quest at this point grants the user a temporary +5 tailoring bonus or whatever.
3) embroider the washcloth with an asapi
4) bring the washcloth to the Blue Aorai (sp?).
mission 2:
Code:
1) go to the park
2) kill and skin an eosheai (well, obtain a pelt somehow).
3) tailor a washcloth (again! i think this takes 1 pelt)
4) attach some beads (given by the quest-giver and, unlike other attachments, has no real skill check).
5) bring it to another area (who knows what).

so the player gets to test out the system and gets rewarded with the amount of a skill a first level guy would get when actually training it. (if a person does the quest later on and the points would result in more than what they would be allowed to have at that level, they're just refunded the skillpoints like they would an autotrained skill that is already at 200).

granted, some skills aren't really complicated or unique enough to justify a tutorial (i can see a tutorial that teaches basic unarmed attacks but not one that is complicated enough to show the joys of most other weapons), but miniquests like these would be great to help people try out skills without dedicating (limited) points into them.

What about the other professions, though?

unarmed combat quest
Code:
the goal of this quest is to teach the user basic unarmed combat moves
punching bag:
Code:
the boxing coach will explain how there are combat moves unique to unarmed combat, unlike other melee and missile based weapons. the player will be told to perform certain 'combo attacks' on the punching bag to help them become aware of what moves are available.
example:
Code:
NPC X says, "Now that you're aware of the moves JAB, ELBOW, and PUNCH, you should practice on that punching bag over there. Just follow my orders."

NPC X says, "JAB"

::insert jab stuff here::

NPC X says, "ELBOW"

::insert elbow stuff here::

NPC X says, "JAB, PUNCH, ELBOW, PUNCH"

::insert one move after the other::

::insert more combos::

NPC X says, "Congradulations! You're going to be a fine fighter someday. Don't forget to return here as you gain skill to see if there are any other unarmed moves available for you!"

As that last line implies, this NPC will also tell you what unarmed moves you can do when ASK X ABOUT UNARMED. the NPC could also tell what you'll learn next once you get enough unarmed.
Code:
NPC X says, "Looks like you're quite good at JAB, PUNCH, KICK, SWEEP, and ELBOW. Maybe in time you'll be ready to know how to PUMMEL."

he could also give a short blurb on each type of attack when you ask about them (aka: ASK X ABOUT JAB).

I just assumed it would be something for each profession. Something that gave a preview of what they would be able to do later on. Like Techs and gadgets, or Agents and poisons.

it's more targetted at things everyone can do. right now a newbie has no clue what any system is or how they work, and i think a mini-quest that also grants some skill points is a good way to let a newbie (or anyone) try something out without dedicating actual skill points into them.
