Alrighty. The engagement system is still fairly new, moreso to me than anyone else as I was on hiatus when it was introduced.

My question is, is there any way for us to retreat to, say, pole range and continue to retreat whenever a critter attempts to engage, yet retreat no further than pole?

You could use HANGBACK <missile|pilum|pole>, ya know. The best part is, after you enter it once, you will automatically try to stay at that range with your opponent.

it's not horrible, but it does get annoying because you do sometimes just randomly give up retreating.

Yeah, I've noticed that. Specifically in the Fen, where the thing you're retreating from is most likely the least threatening to you.
