Heh I was reading a message board earlier and some guy posted a new 'Snape theory', it's actually pretty unique and well researched.

*****************

First and foremost, Snape is good. For all the reasons most "Snape is good" theories state. The hushed conversation, his screaming, "DO NOT CALL ME COWARD," and all the other things you've heard a million times before. Dumbledore is dead, killed by Snape via his own orders.

Here's the new part.. Snape has always been good. He was NEVER a Death Eater. In fact, he was Dumbledore's most trusted spy.

I first thought of it while re-reading PoA. Near the beginning of the book, someone mentions how Dumbledore had many very useful spies in Voldemort's rank. That got me thinking to who those spies might have been. And Snape seems like the perfect candidate.

We learned in HBP that Snape is a much, much more powerful wizard than we ever realized. However, he was a complete and total outcast at Hogwart's. Few (if any) friends, and constantly made fun of, his thoughts turned - not towards revenge, as we have been lead to believe - but towards a strong desire to prove himself. Rather than being driven to Voldemort, he was driven to Dumbledore. His interest in the dark arts and his Hogwart's career made him the perfect candidate for someone to join the Death Eaters - and to be a double-agent.

But Voldemort is one of the best legilimens in the world. Even with how gifted Snape is at occlumency, he wouldn't be able to hide his true loyalties from Voldemort. But in PoA, we learned about the Fidelius Charm. According to Flitwick, the charm allows a secret to be hidden inside a person - and the information is impossible for ANYONE to retrieve as long as the secret-keeper remains quiet. I quote: "As long as the Secret-Keeper refused to speak, You-Know-Who could search the village where Lily and James were staying for years and never find them, not even if he had his nose pressed against their sitting room window!"

So, to make sure Snape would become trusted by Voldemort, Dumbledore performed a Fidelius Charm - and made himself the Secret-Keeper of the knowledge that Snape was a spy. As long as he never spoke of it, Voldemort would never be able to find out. That means he cannot tell anyone - even someone like McGonagall. Why was he never able to explain why he trusted Snape after Snape "came back" from Voldemort? Because doing so would break the charm and allow Voldemort to know the truth!

Now onto why Snape hates Harry. The only real answer we have for this is because Snape hated James so much. This is probably true to some extent, but I don't believe it's the full reason. Think back to what I said about Snape's extreme desire to prove himself to the world. He'd proven himself to Dumbledore, but Dumbledore was unable to tell anybody the truth, leading to Snape being even MORE hated by the rest of the wizarding world. So while he worked tirelessly to provide the Order with information, what happens? A little one-year-old child defeats Voldemort and leads to his downfall. All of Snape's potential glory is cut short by a child too young to even know what happened. Already cynical and bitter from his teenage years, Snape can never forgive Harry for stealing his chance to prove his worth.

We see the exact same thing happen in PoA. Throughout the book, we hear repeatedly about Snape's desire to catch Sirius single-handedly. Again, this is partially due to his hatred of Sirius, but it's also another chance to prove himself. When it happens, he is awarded Order of Merlin. Finally! But then what happens? Harry costs him his glory again! We see a Snape more furious than ever before at this point of the book.

Now why, if Snape has always been aligned with Dumbledore, would Dumbledore still refuse to give him the Defense Against the Dark Arts job? We learned the answer to that in HBP, as well - because Dumbledore knew the job had been cursed by Voldemort. Knowing perfectly well that if Snape was given the job, he would be gone in a year, he couldn't give it to Snape. He was too valuable. And think about it. It was only ever a rumor that Snape desperately wanted the job. We never see a single instance of malice towards the DADA teachers that was caused by his desire for the position. We never see a single scrap of evidence that Snape does want to do it. This is because he, too, knows it is cursed.

Yes, of course he's good. Dumbledore wanted him to kill him. It's all part of the plan.

Wow Kit, that was a crappy response to that WONDERFUL thread opening Tugor provided. Granted, he didn't write it, but it all seems good. *applaud*

i aint as good as tugor at wording myself but my thoughts are.

basically dumbledore didnt wanted to lose one of his strongest magicians and knowing that he himself was somewhat weakened he chose to let snape kill him .

snape would die anyway if he did not kill dumbledore due to the unbreakable vow he made to dracos mother as draco having no backbone could not carry through the plot to kill dumbledore himself and so would have been killed by lord voldermort.

and that was my thoughts on the latest book .
i am waiting so impatiantly now for the next one Twisted Evil
