The way the two classes are defined has been a steady thing, but I can see where that might be hard to determine for players.

Agents are as much as special agent as they are an urban survivalist or a street thug. They own the realms of stealth, subterfuge, assassination, security systems including computer-based ones, intrusion, theft, etc. Examples of an Agent would be a secret agent, a jewel thief, a common alleyway thug, a hacker, an assassin, etc.

Technicians design, create and repair electronic devices, whether that's repairing cyberware, upgrading security systems, modding a pulse weapon (akin to "slicing" in star wars, for example), building droids, or even doing serious work on vehicles up to an including, say, spacecraft.

I think there's a ton of potential for both professions. But clearly, a tech may understand security systems and technology, but is not the best suited to bypass or exploit them.

Computers, electronics, cyberwear.. these are all a Techs domain. We are the best, we know it all. How are you going to say the tech that build the system, and the other tech that wants to tear it down, dont know all the backdoors? sure, agents should be able to use this system too.. but they Dont build the security systems. they dont deal with the ever changing tech, from the inside, as its built.

in short: yes let agents do this, but dont take it from us, dont limit us. we rule the systems.. what we create, we can destroy.

I'm not the Tech or the Agent guru, but I -can- tell you from a lifetime of IT experience...those who BUILD the hardware don't always understand the software.

I knew IT professionals who could (and did) design tiny delicate memory wafer chips, but didn't understand that you had to install a printer driver to be able to print from your PC.

Just my two cents for the day. Wink

your right.. that is a person that got a job in a place where they thought they would make money. they were trained how to push buttons on a machine.. if there is a new machine put in, they are trained to push buttons and maintain that. I dont view that person as a technician, reguardless of thier job title. granted, there are those that actually design the chips.. before its turned into a mass produection thing.

Personally a technician knows software, and hardware. what works best together, what blows up together.

and while that's a good arguement, the agents are the super spies in haelrahv. the techs are more like the sidekick wacky professor who makes the gadgets.

And that's exactly the type of person I was talking about. These guys had doctorates and were micro-electronic engineers. They understood hardware like you wouldn't believe. They actually designed the chips (not just sat around pushing buttons so the machine would make them).

But understanding software? Hahaha....

Course we know software...we work on organizers. And program droids, which are massively complicated.

but you're not breaking into them.

maybe techs can't work under that specific kind of pressure.
maybe techs can't break into the area before using the tools.
maybe techs can't hide properly while using the tools.

it isn't like hacking in Haelrahv means a computer a few hundred miles away and a DSL line. it can mean breaking and entering and then using some tech-tools. and techs might not be cut for that line of work, but they may be cut for making the tools.

Actually, in what I was suggesting, it DOES mean a computer a few hundred miles away and a DSL line. Not breaking in with tech tools.

Being able to rebuild an engine doesn't guarantee I know how to build a car bomb.

Um, I'm a tech and I agree...software is entirely different.

We as techs know how to repair the hardware but nowhere in our skills do we specialize in "Computers". If we did, I'd say it would be our realm to hack. However, it isn't.

Organizers are a stretch. I don't know why techs get the ability to repair them by popping in a disk. It makes no sense to me.

We are the ones that saulder, tinker, mend, and seal. We do *not* hack, and I'm not entirely behind the idea of making us do so.

Yes, I realize that occurs. That's a specific occurrance of us doing to something that which we shouldn't, and we are also the only ones who can touch our droids.

Agents use hacking skill to crack security systems.

Technicians use hacking skill to improve security(and general purpose) systems.
