Okay, so I'm no fan of George W. Bush and that's been a known fact. But I have to say, I am truly, truly amazed at how low the man can go.

In Biloxi, Mississippi, Bush comforted two weeping women on a street where a house had collapsed and towering trees were stripped of their branches. "My son needs clothes," said Bronwynne Bassier, 23, clutching several trash bags. "I don't have anything."

"I understand that," Bush said. He kissed both women on their heads and walked with his arms around them, telling them they could get help from the Salvation Army. "Hang in there," he said.

The top leader of our country finally lands on the ground 5 days after the greatest natural disaster in our history, and one of his first actions was to pass the buck. You don't send the woman looking for the Salvation Army Fairy, you get the woman some damn clothes for her and her child. Anyone of decent character would open their wallet or purse right there on the spot if they had to, especially when you should be trying to reassure thousands of people suffering by showing you care about them.

AMEN!

The saddest part is all the people who are helping or want to help who barely have a dime to their name in the first place but our president cant even manage a buck when it would actually be good for his image.

Why should he care about his image? It's the last term he can serve as president he doesn't have to worry about re-election. He can be an asshole all he wants so long as he don't break any laws to get impeached.

Yeah, but he does have a legacy to leave behind, and everything he does reflects on that legacy. This is, of course, completely discounting the fact he also has an obligation to the people of this country and the ability to improve people's lives if he so chooses. So there's incentive, but I don't think the man can see much of anything past his tunnel vision view of the future or the country.

I don't know if you're referring to my original post or a reply to it, but I don't believe everything I hear in the media, but that was a pretty straightforward piece of information presented as a factual account. While it could have been fiction, it seems very unlikely. And, based on my own personal thoughts on Bush, it seems to fit past performance.

And frankly, who are we going to trust, if not the media in some form? Where else can we get accounts of what's going on in or world?

My favorite piece of factual reporting related to this has to do with quite a few sites reporting, "10,000 feared dead." But considering what that statement is based on, they may as well have been relying on Nostradamus.

Quote:
David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican senator said: "My guess is that it [the death toll] will start at 10,000, but that is only a guess." He said this estimate was not based on any official death toll or body count.

I hope that this is one of the times they're wrong.

It certainly seems plausible, but hopefully things look worse than they are. Without a doubt a lot of those who do die couldn't have been saved, unfortunately. Likewise, I'm sure a lot could have been if more responders and supplies were available sooner.

I think that the government assumes a couple days where people are in great part "on their own" after something of this magnitude -- this is based on some statements from officials I've read.

I know some will say that's unacceptable, and maybe it is. At least to some degree. But I'll cut them some slack and say okay, two days it is. It took five. All you have to do is listen to the mayor to hear how completely abandoned the city was for those five days. By his own account officers had to loot gunshops for ammo, work without rest, and stop rescue missions to secure areas where havoc was breaking out.

And that's just his account. Obviously there's much worse out the in the stories.

What one could hope for as the best result of this is that we plan and design our responses better in the future. It's my belief that during 40's, 50's we did an excellent job of really looking at our future and planning for problems. I think WWII played a big part in that. But in the decades since, I think technology improved while our use of techology declined and we haven't done what we're capable of doing to strengthen our country.

i think what was unacceptable to me as an outsider looking in .. when the president ask for evacuation of the areas in the destruction path he failed to provide any transport for the poorer families . so basically if you was poor , elderly or disabled you had no way of getting out befor katrina arrived . if this was anywhere else where you where left to die because of your monetary or physical circumstances failing to fit ,we would call it ethnic cleansing but thats just my views on the matter.

For almost a decade the government of Lousiana has been saying that this disaster just wasn't probably in the cards, but was going to happen. It was just a matter of time...seeing as how New Orleans is a "soup bowl" and any and all flooding is always so devistating. It's kinda like with Yellowstone. It's not a matter of if...it's a matter of when. Which is really unfortunate. However, the coastline of LA diminishes at a staggering rate of 2 football fields an hour...mostly because people are messing up the marshes with all of their oil drilling....without the marsh barrier, New Orleans is in a word fucked.

Right, I know. But that NG article was so dead-on in. That's what I thought was wild. The fact it was written just last year adds an edge too.

I haven't heard anything about my school doing it, but I'll suggest it at the next student government meeting. Even if we are just a two-year school, I'm sure there were a lot of displaced undergrads. Excellent idea.
