Would it be possible to get a temporary(temp as in since this is beta) flex hunting area. The idea is from DR.

Whatever spawns in the hunting area would 'flex' to 10-20 levels higher than the highest person in the area at the time. That way high level combat people won't feel bored when they go to hunt.

Tshsar blasts through Elite Guards like paper and from what I know they are the hardest huntable critter aside from Thekko, and he's never around whenever I go check. It's just boring.

Make them a bit smart too, maybe variations with ranged weapons, some with magic, and some all melee. Nowbi are a great example but they are just too weak. A flex of that entire group on Echak would be cool.

is it even possible to hunt 10-20 levels over your head anymore?

No idea. No way to test it since Tshar is the eqivalent of 117th level. Elite Guards are 105 I believe.

That, in my opinion, would seriously suck for anyone wanting to hunt there when some 'big person' came to hunt there. It'd just make more sense to have higher level critters.

Never fear. The area I'm presently working on features critters whose lowest represented level is theoretically 108. It just spikes up from there.

I have some ideas as well on this point that I've had in mind, but doing it is another matter. Wink I didn't know DR had any such mechanism (not that it's a shock).

flex hunting in DR failed because once a level X showed up, all the level Ys were screwed.

What I would like to set up isn't like that at all, and wouldn't work that way at all, but would still have dynamic levels. What I'd like to do, is have the ability for a player to go to an area that is instanced more or less (for those not familiar with that term, several copies of the area are made and each player gets their own copy) and set up spawns within based on your level. However, various restrictions, risks and catches would apply so as to not completely remove the purpose of traditional hunting.

Now THAT would be cool. Hunting smart things that get better as you get better.

While we're discussing critters...

Some of my favorites in GemStone were the Shan and the Ithzir.

There are several types of each, each relating to a similar class a PC can pick.

They acted similar to characters. If a PC knocked down a Shan Warrior with, say, a Shan Ranger in the room, the Shan Ranger would pull the warrior to its feet. If the Ranger got stunned, the Warrior would drag him out, etc. A Shan Cleric could heal their injured and cast defensive Cleric spells on the others, etc.

Was quite challenging to hunt them, especially if they showed up as a 'party'.

A text-version of Guild Wars. That sounds like awesome.

I've always liked the idea of group-oriented hunting (areas).

That's great news. I hope they are really nasty.

To give you an idea of the scope of what I'm trying to accomplish -- I've coded three brand new unique attacks (with a couple features) just for the lowest level mob; I've only barely worked on any of the other creatures outside of conceptualizing.
