I think the best, fairest, and easiest way to balance the treasure found by hunting would be to simply eliminate it. Everyone loses. No one feels treated unfairly in comparison to other players.

Who needs treasure? We'll just post a billboard somewhere that ranks you in order of most damage dealt total, most critters killed, and most damage taken total. Lists are everything.
