If you could play a commoner (non-profession character), would you? Commoners would have no profession bonuses or other bonuses, but may have off the wall titles, etc. |
Not at all. |

I might dabble, but I doubt I'd play one seriously. |

I guess it would really depend on what bonuses you'd get for being a commoner, apart from the anonimity (my big word for the day )

No bonuses. It wouldn't be a 13th class, it'd be a non-class. Every skill would be double trainable only, you'd be able to level up, but you'd get no bonuses. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

As an exDR player, I tried RP a 4 year old eloth one. The fact that she wasn't a member of a guild made that increasingly hard because she couldn't purchase items, level or do various other items. Eventually I got tired of the restrictions and finally joined a guild.
It was enjoyable to play a child for the brief period I did and wished the game had been more helpful to that. Its my own idea that allowing someone to play a commoner allows for some interesting RP opportunities, and I think it would be great.
Also, is there a way for a commoner to join a guild later on? _________________ "I'm not quiet...I'm plotting" |

My thoughts as to a Hael version of a commoner:
- Can select a profession later.
- Can shop at all shops, use normal banking etc channels etc
- Can train stats and skills, level up
- Does not receive any bonuses associated with profession choice while a commoner.
- Does not receive autoskills, but would receive said autoskills after choosing a profession retroactively, probably *
* Would not be allowed to exceed normal 2x/3x skill training restrictions, excess skill points would be converted to skill training points. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

Always liked the concept, myself. Gives an extra challenge to those who want one. _________________ pro.gram.mer (n) - a device which converts caffeine into code |

Hmm, okay bear with me here, it's Friday and the minds on getting OUTTA HERE......... ( work in case your wondering )
As a commoner I would still receive levels/skills/experience (call it what you will) points and not be left behind by a professional, ie; I could learn weapon/armor/other skills just like someone who has joined one of the professional classes and not be penalised for it?
Yeah, yeah, I know probably been answered but I can't find it anywhere ::flails:: and I'm curious _________________ ~My Reality Check Bounced~

Yes, but you wouldn't recieve the benefits of any of the professions (i.e bonuses and being able to triple train core skills, like thoes who have a profession can do) _________________ "I'm not quiet...I'm plotting" |

Just a note... professions don't have penalties associated with them, only bonuses.
Armor, for example, is wearable by anyone. However, the heavier the armor is, the more it affects one's ability to do magic -- regardless of profession.
Certain professions receive bonuses and the ability to triple train skills (example, Troopers get a bonus to armor and can triple both armor skills) but none receive a penalty.
So, you aren't gaining anything as a commoner except some RP freedom and the ability to delay your profession decision, if you choose to do so.
We haven't decided if the commoner option will be available (there is some small amount of extra work needed to put it in place), but we're feeling out interest and pointing out how it will work, if implemented. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

I love the idea, and would definitely consider it. It allows you more freedom to role-play your character. You're not confined to classes. Your character can start out as a commoner, and then as they begin to train, decide what path they really want to go. |

For what it's worth, I second HR-Arden's comments. |

I might play a commoner for a bit. I can definately see people playing commoners/citizens to RP more freely and without restrictions. Though I myself usually like to have a bases to RP off from so don't think I would be as involved with my commoner as others. |

The main problem I have noticed with commoners, is when they decide to go join a guild is, they lose all of thier old experience. If one didnt lose all of thier prior experience, then I would welcome the idea whole heartedly. |
