To my gleeful surprise when I woke up, NSKILLS for defense and offense skills were put into effect sometime early this morning. The learning rates for defense are odd though.

Light Armor : 0 (35%)
Shield Use : 0 (12%)

Given that I stopped using shield to see how I would fare learning evasion for a bit, the armor skill is still moving faster than shield is. Due to a flaw my shield is lower than my armor even though I've trained them equally. Is armor supposed to go up that much faster? This was also done on creatures well below my level (the glughok fen things).

It seemed like the eobais were teaching me a little bit of armor but I was some of everything from from the warriors and berserkers.

Yeah, I'm sad to see that hunting things that are at my level and can beat me up (arakus) hardly teach me evasion (after hunting half a dozen I got 0.64%) and don't teach marksmanship at all.

Oddly enough, though, I learned light armor (5.13%) by wearing just a face shield.

Unlike DR, just using your armor in combat at all helps, and that's both on attack AND defense. After all, you have to deal with the difficulties of using your armor all the time, right?

Failing to defend will cause defense skills to train up more often than successfully defending.

I'll probably adjust the rates on both some as time and more testing continues.

Ack. I can't say I like that. I play Yaru based on the fact that he's small, fast, and able to dodge. I play off the fact that if he gets hit, it's going to hurt. So, argh. :\

Which is why you'll be able to buy skills with points. Yaaaay.

Gah, wait, you mean we're giving you a reason to take risks? What was WRONG with me?! Heaven forbid! Wink

Seriously, there is a reason that armor and vitality (and hp upgrade items/spells/etc) exist. And REVIVE for that matter. ;D

Hah, well personally I thought I was taking a huge risk by planning to rely on just coordination, perception, and agility, as opposed to a ton of armor and lots of health.

I'm not saying that I should learn from asapis if I have the dodging powers of a ninja, but I'd also hate to have to get hit in order to learn. That's the one big thing I hated about DR.

You don't have to get hit to learn. You just learn more quickly.

Alrighty, that's fine by me, then. Smile

I'm used to playing combat heavy giant lugs who take all the damage, so when I started Yaru up I wanted to try to do the complete opposite. Small tiny guy who dodges but if he gets hit he's in trouble.

...I miss the former, heh.

Okay, so I tested out the 'if you get hit, you'll learn better' deal.

As a level 34 artisan, I'm assuming red gragroks are at level for me.

I went and killed half a dozen of them.

Skill Sheet For Yaru Dex (before hunting):
Evasion : 0 ( 9%) [0.0961]
Marksmanship : 0 ( 0%) [0.0]

Skill Sheet For Yaru Dex (after hunting):
Evasion : 0 (10%) [0.1089]
Marksmanship : 0 ( 0%) [0.0]

ps: wow am I going to be hurting if blood siphon is made mage-only. yeesh.

edit: I just took on more more red gragrok. It hit me twice (both being 'serious' hits... so glad it was to a cyberpart). It made me learn 2% just from those two hits. It's an odd system, I tell you! I feel like I learn too much via severe beatings and too little by almost getting it right.

I think that's how it's suppose to work. You only get a very very little.

Killing half a dozen critters that are actively able to hit me should not grant me 1% in evasion.

Along with that, killing half a dozen critters that are hard to hit should not grant me NO marksmanship.

Heh, I wanted to see if gragoks were where I should be, since Kamohakuns are too easy and the next thing up from them is poisonous (Hoorah for poison intolerance). I walked in, got hit, stunned and knocked down, and promptly left as soon as I came too. I leared a % point of Light Armor off that one hit, yet no shield skill at all. "I'll probably try them again in a level, since I'm still hindered by my armor.

If they are actively able to hit you I'd say you're not learning very much about evasion. If you were actively able to evade their hits, then yes, you're learning well grasshopper.

Just because you can kill something doesn't mean you can evade it from smacking you around.

1) Are you reading what I am writing
2) Are you just replying to hear your own voice

I said they hit me so the evasion rate feels too slow to me. I said they're not teaching marksmanship, AT ALL.

Seriously, do you just like talking?
