Confused pets

Ok, my pets seem to be messed up. I was hiding, and they were being quiet in their carrier, like good little aibas. Then they started doing this:

You hear a plaintive cry of hunger coming from the direction of a soft black leather pet carrier.

So I fed them. And as soon as I did, they started doing things like this from inside the carrier:

A glossy black aiba squeaks and leaps into the air for no apparent reason.

I took one out and they both messaged like that twice, then the one in the carrier did a proper carrier action so I put the other one back, but now they're both back to doing out-of-the-carrier actions..while they're in the carrier and I'm hiding. I tried closing the carrier but they still do it! I also tried shushing and un-shushing but it didn't help. They're quiet if I hide and hold them, heh.

Checked and double checked. The only way a pets hunger will degrade, is if the owner is in the game world at the time.
