Levels should be factored into game systems...

I'm just a bit interested in what folks feel is appropriate for levels. Currently level is almost never used as an indicator of power except in when you get certain abilities, and your skill caps.

For instance, hit/stamina/focus/essence points have nothing at all to do with level. Combat factors level in nowhere. So, is this great, does it suck, or what?

Ok this is a first... I am a first in something.. any way I think it should be based more on skill also because it will reduce the levelers from becoming just a person that has only the basic just so they can get the level ability without the work it takes to become good or proficient in the profession. In other words it takes away the slaves. medics for just ourselves, brokers for just our characters, techs for our use only.... It will make it where if you have a character in that profession you will actually have to work longer than a month to do what is needed to be good.

Yeah, I've never thought that levels should factor into things too much, because they're pretty much just markers. I like it how it is right now.

To me, levels are just another way to show off to your friends. Skills are more important, especially since each profession has its own separate triple and double trainable lists (and how I wish there were some skills that some professions could only single, but I digress).

Of course, the next natural question is, do you feel levels are "worth" enough to you as a player? If so, would they be once caps are gone?

Two days ago, I would have said no. But now that every 5 levels I either get a new title or a new technique, I think they're worth it. Even if they didn't seem worth it to me, I think that they're necessary. It's really hard to imagine an RPG (online or not) that doesn't have levels. Even though they're not a direct factor (in checks and such), they're a good indicator of where you are.

"Worth" is a rather broad word, I think. They're worth the convenience, that's for sure. By that, I mean.. everyone knows that a level 2 character has 30,000 experience minimum, and everyone knows that a level 50 character has 1,470,000 experience minimum. In that respect, they're worth having.

They're also worth having in respect to when certain abilities are handed out. Sure, you could make that based solely on skills and/or stats. Which, actually, would probably be better a better choice once more and more profession-based abilities are created. That way you won't necessarily have them "queued", as is what happened when Hunter rearranged the Guardian abilities a little.

Well. Now that I've sat and thought about it, they really are nothing more than a bragging right, aren't they? The only other convenience I could think of is planning your character out as far as stat points go, but that's being done away with under Live's experience system.

Obviously, I'd like more abilities to fill up the large gaps we see now in some professions, but this is something we're more likely to see in prime.

took bit of thought for this one.

I think levels are more for braggin than anything else an sort of gage.
I'd like seeing that skills an stats have the most influence an since caps will be going away it will help in keeping from having cookie cutter characters, as is now it seems to be if your a certain level, you can almost be certain of the skills/stats a bit of that character. As they get higher without level mattering much you may find some surprises or more surprises than you might expect.

Ok well, I like levels, because I like having that feeling of accomplishment when I attain a new level, some of you may not appreciate this because you level regularly, but I do. Yeah, they don't actually do much, but, why not have them?

Oh, and maybe a little off topic, but I've been wondering this, what kinda thing is gonna replace triple/doulbe trainable skills when there aren't any caps?

There's a thread that goes into more detail, but basically certain skills will cost less to train, depending on profession.
