Log of a meeting (edited for login/comm/healing messages, etc.) with Hunter discussing a bunch of topics, mostly revolving around Guardians and unarmed combat, that William and I had compiled, posting here so the rest of y'all might benefit from the information. He made a request, specifically related to Guardians, skip to the end if you don't feel like reading the entire thing.

*** Hunter Ja'Kaal arrives to assist you. ***

You wave to Hunter Ja'Kaal.
You say, "Hiyas."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal leans on you.
Hunter Ja'Kaal asks, "What's up?"
You ask, "Me and Will been writing things down, was wondering if ya had a little time?"
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Sure."
You exclaim, "Excellent!"
You say, "Ok, lessee.."
You say, "Umm.. no particular order.."

You say, "Meditation req for advancement."
You say, "We thought maybe it was a good idea, being priests and all."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Not sure what you mean by a meditation req."
You say, "Well, that ya have to spend some time in meditation."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Well, I could... but no other profession has anything beyond exp as a req."
You nod.
You say, "Ya, kinda tying that into maybe some other of our special abilities."
You say, "Along the lines of clerical devotion in DR."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "I want to do something similer to devotion, but not as a req, just as a power level modifier."
You ponder.
You nod.
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Poor devotion would make your meditations weaker or non usable."
You say, "That's a good idea there."
You say, "So we could still level if we wanted to, but to be really good at our job, we'd have to do some meditations or someting."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal nods.

You say, "Ok.. the focus recovery of mediation."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal nods.
'You say, "The messaging indicates that it helps, but I don't see it."
'Too little essence maybe?
You ask, "Too little essence maybe?"
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "It doubles your natural recovery rate once you pass the messaging telling how full your pool is."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Of course if you check it, you break your meditation."
You ask, "Ahh.. for as long as we meditate, or for a period of time after?"
You say, "Gotcha."
You say, "So we gotta get to know ourselves a bit, and just time it."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Once you pass that messaging, it's for as long as you keep doing it, until you are full... it doesn't put you over your normal max."
You ask, "Maybe leave some way to check focus during the meditation?"
You say, "We're looking inward after all."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Well then your mind isn't clear, is it... I specifically made it so even things like exp breaks it."
You nod.
You say, "I can understand that."
You say, "Explains why it didn't seem to help though, thanks."

You say, "Ok, next up.. ranged attack."
You say, "I think we brought this up before, maybe some kind of leap attack."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal nods.
You say, "Since we're the only profession that can't use any kind of ranged weapons."
You say, "Once the engagement system is done, we're gonna be at a disadvantage."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "I was also concidering the med that charges your limbs with energy letting you throw the energy for increased cost, also thrown sigils are a maybe."
You say, "Maybe a sigil that prevents retreating.. I dunno, that sounds a bit constricting to group members though."
You say, "Unless they're immune to it."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Someone, I think William actually, has a board icon of an animeish looking character throwing a handful of cards with pentacles on them..."

You say, "Ok, more weapon stuffs.."
You say, "I think there's a gap in specializations."
You say, "Everyoyone else can train 2 or 3, but we're limited to one."
You say, "Theoretically we should be twice as good at unarmed as anyone else."
Hunter Ja'Kaal asks, "Have you been reading about the possible new exp system?"
>You say, "Stances help some, but it seems like we're still lacking."
You nod.
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "When that happens, specializing in one thing will make you twice as good, since there won't be level caps."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Though that won't be until the new engine."
You say, "I see, so since we'd only use one weapon, we'd have twice the training time, not having to worry about other stuff."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Right."
You say, "We're not talking about specific skills though."
You say, "I can see how it wouldn't apply though."
You say, "Ya can use your rifle all the time and train nothing but unarmed, but after a while you're rifle will be ineffective."
You nod.
You ponder.

You say, "Ok.. about snowfall."
You say, "Hook and kick don't seem to work under it."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Really? I'll check it out, though the way it works it theoretically should have no effect on which moves work."
You say, "I can get RT reductions with everything else that I'm capable of, up to backhand, but not hook or kick."
You say, "Never once seen it happen, and we've done it a lot."

You say, "A little more unarmed stuff.."
>Umm, strength modifier..
You say, "Umm, strength modifier.."
You say, "I've got 60 strength, when I punch someone/thing it should hurt pretty damn bad."
You say, "But I've yet to get a one-hit kill on even eoshai."
You ask, "Which leads to a coordination question.. does it affect how well ya hit, or just IF ya hit?"
>Hunter Ja'Kaal asks, "Do you ever destroy a limb in one hit?"
You ponder.
You say, "I never thought to look, the messaging doesn't say so."
You say, "The best I've gotten is critcal."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Critical isn't exactly a power level of a hit like the other ones."
You say, "Sure it is."
You say, "I' don't mean a critical hit, I mean a critical strike."
You smile.
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Oh, ok."

You say, "Oh yeah.. dual attacks."
You say, "Like folks can fire two rifles, or a whip and a net.."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "It'a planned for unarmed, but it's a little trickier."
You nod.
You say, "Got a good attack like that in several martial arts forms."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Since it'd be hard to tell when you'd rather not dual attack, though that's easy to tell with other weapons, just don't hold it."
You nod.
You say, "Good point."
You ask, "Maybe a couple special commands?"
You say, "Like doublepunch or some sort."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Hmm, maybe."
You ask, "What about a Dim Mok?"
You grin.
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Death touch? maybe, but it'd be really high level."
You drool.
You say, "I wouldn't mind working for it, but to be able to achieve it would be sweet."

You say, "I think Morrigan covered the stat bonus stuff with bioware."
You ponder.
You say, "Since we can't get implants and all that, we can't take advantage of the stat bonuses."
You say, "Well, we *can*.."
You say, "Not a good idea though."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Right."
You ask, "Wouldn't that go against our code?"
You say, "I mean, we rely on our natural bodies, not some artificial device."
You say, "So we shouldn't even be allowed to get them."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "In spirit, but there's nothing coded to enforce it."
nod
You nod.
You say, "Nothing coded to stop us from wearing armor either."
You chuckle.
>Hunter Ja'Kaal grins.
You ask, "So this bioware, will be like cyber, but with much less essence cost?"
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Well for now, with all those points not spent on weapons and armor, you could always learn some alchemy or spells or psi."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Yes."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "But likely not until the new engine, so I wouldn't worry about it yet."
You say, "Yeah, spells and stuff I been working on, they're a huuuge help."
You say, "Well, they will be when Trev fixes Sacrifice."
You chuckle.

You say, "We'd also talked about a possible unarmed bonus for guardians."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "There is one."
You say, "Beyond the 10%.. either moving it to core skills to justify it, or perhaps a straight +10 (+4 for human) head start."
You say, "Since we devote our lives to one thing.."
You say, "Hard to know if stuff is really balanced when there's so much not in yet."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Hmm, I'll think about it... but once you start getting higher levels you'll become a serious fighting machine, with multiple meds running at once you can be pretty fearsome... being at a disadvantage at the start seems to help balance the power out for later."
You nod to Hunter Ja'Kaal.
You say, "There is that too, and we haven't had a chance to esplore those levels yet."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal nods.

Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Hurry up."
Hunter Ja'Kaal grabs you by the shoulders and shakes you!
You say, "Almost there.."

You say, "Also.. the stance difficulty."
You say, "Snowfall.."
You say, "I get about 50% effective."
You ask, "Intended that a stance we get at 5th takes until 15th or 20th to be really effective?"
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Honestly I hadn't originially intended for you to get a stance at fifth, I wanted a system where you train with a master... I tossed it into 5th because William was complaining about waiting until 10th for the first ability."
You chuckle.
You say, "I'll smack him for ya for that then."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "So it might very well not be balanced for 5th."
You nod.

You say, "And last one.. Shove is still terribly ineffective."
You say, "Even for a brute like me with 27 athletics."
You say, "I'm one strong cookie."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "I'll check into that too."
You say, "I shouldn't be failing on small hatul, I should be throwing them down the beach."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "I agree unless coord or agility are important, I'll talk to Cyril, he made shove as a part of the engagement system."
You say, "That reminds me, ya didn't answer my coordination question."
You say, "If it affects how well ya hit, or just IF ya hit.. not counting specific area targeting."
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "Oh, coord lets you target specific body areas, which is how you become really effective."
You ponder.
>Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "So I'd say it's pretty important for combat."
You say, "So that leaves the strength damage modifier still in question."
You say, "I agree, just wondering if it was why I wasn't hitting as hard as it seems I should."
You flex, showing a powerful forearm.

You ask, "Ok man, I really appreciate your time... if ya don't mind, I'll post this log so others can benefit?"
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "No problem, and I'd like to hear some ideas on the boards about what might cause increases and decreases in "devotion" besides meditating."
You say, "Excellent! We'll get to work on a new list of stuff to bother ya about straight away."
You grin.
You say, "Means a lot to us that you'll take the time to go over this stuff with us, thanks."
Hunter Ja'Kaal says, "I'm happy to, now get cracking on that list, it's a two way street."
Hunter Ja'Kaal winks at you.
You laugh!
Hunter Ja'Kaal waves.
You say, "We're up to the challenge."
You wave.
Hunter Ja'Kaal slips behind that big thing over there.

Haw. You know you love me. Very Happy At least now you know Snowfall actually works to some degree.

PS: I'll get to work on a few devotion modifiers during Lit class today (who cares about Caucer, anyway?).

PPS: Hunter, or anyone else who may be wondering, he brought up the one-hit kill thing under the 'Strength Modifier' part of your discussion because I did manage to get a one-hit kill on a chith a few days ago.. despite my lacking five times his strength. <shrug>

I actually increased the damage modifiers for strength (and perception in the case of fired weapons) yesterday, because looking at the numbers, the benefit was pretty insignificant.

Thanks, boss! At least I know it wasn't just my imagination.

And to answer Hunter's question, no, I never destroy a limb in one shot, even with post-tweek massive/devastating hits.

Damage is still tied in great part to your actual skill, so as your unarmed increases, so will your damage.
