moving this here to avoid derailing the other thread:

level 200? we're going to 200 now?

It would be naive to casually say we're going to make all game content scale into eternity, but we're going to attempt to do so as much as possible. Rather that encouraging the creation of lots of alts, we're encouraging a prolonged life for individual characters and continual achievement.

that works! does that mean skills can go beyond 500, too, or just that you can progress beyond 100? how is post-100 different in Live as opposed to now?

Yes, skills will be able to go beyond 500, too. Stats will be able to continue to grow, also.

One important difference between what's common now and what will be common in Live is that raising skill ranks won't simply mean continual returns on stuff you've been doing since you had low skills. For instance, alchemy won't work the way it does now where you can endlessly make potions with more and more doses for more and more money by raising your skill.

However, as it does now, more skill can unlock more options like new potions. In some cases it might do neither, but instead make a specific task easier in some way by unlocking an easier way to do it. For instance, you might start out having to do alchemy as you do now, but as you master a specific mixture, you might be able to make a potion in one simple step if you have all the equipment and resources at your fingertips. MIX TINCTURE OF HEALTH and voila, you start pulling out the necessary stuff and mixing it up with that one command. That's a possible perk of high skill.

Sounds kewl, just please don't make it so that I'm stuck hunting kuchos for the rest of my life because of tweaks in the system make the crite higher than kuchos harder to handle. I'm not gonna name which game did this but it did have a Big D in the name. Heh.

If a game is properly designed, any expansion to character levels/progression allows them to properly translate to new content in a reasonable fashion.

i.e. it's ridiculous to let people level up and expand their abilities but make creatures that are impossible to actually learn from to continue that progression. If we did something like that, it would certainly not be intended.

But I'm willing to bet that people from the, uh, "D" game would say it's either not intended either, or that they disagree with you that it's as bad as it is. I can't comment on them in particular because I don't play said game, but I think, generally speaking, if your common joe player sees something that should be possible as impossible, there's a high chance your numbers are mucked up.
