Looks like an excellent engagement system so far, Trevor!
When we ASSESS in combat, will we be given an ascii-graphic similar to those pictures you posted? Just for an easy representation to let us know where everything is? Something similar to the initial engagement system would be great. Like,
Code: |
>ASSESS
...........
.o...1...2.
.3...X...4.
.o...o...o.
...........
X = you, o = empty slot, # = filled slot
1: Trevor; melee
2: Beau; pilum
3: Tkil; melee
4: Mickey; melee |
Instead of numbering like your graphics, I think numbering it straight from left to right, top to bottom is better. I guess there's no real benefit to this, since they would still fill in at the same locations your graphics detail, but something about knowing who engaged at what time makes me happy.
What would be above and beyond is if you could add in a way to show your party members in the same assess screen if they're engaged with one of your opponents. Something like,
Code: |
>ASSESS
..........B......
.o...1...2.......
.3...X...4...A...
.o...o...o.......
.................
X = you, o = empty slot, # = filled slot
1: Trevor; melee
2: Beau; pilum
3: Tkil; melee
4: Mickey; melee
Your party is aiding you!
A = Jesus; melee with 4 (Mickey)
B = Hannah; melee with 2 (Beau) |
I don't know if there would be any benefit to this unless there were some kind of crazy combat combo system you could plan around. And it might be difficult trying to get the system to overlay multiple engagements in one display, but I'm not a coder so I have no clue.

I was planning on having something similar to what you mentioned in the first ascii graphic, where you can clearly see where things are.
I don't plan on the extras you mentioned because you won't have any relation to other engagements. For example, if you're engaged with a chith and Hannah is engaged with a different chith, there is no positional tracking that says you're in this part of the room and Hannah is in that part of the room. You're just both in the room.
Now, technically you could have a relational link if Hannah is enagaged to the same chith you are, but this will have no or little representation in ASSESS. An example of what we could do...
Code: |
.--1. .--2. .---.
| 4 | | 1 | | 2 |
.---. .---. .---.
.---. ^ .---.
| | -X- | 3 |
.---. | .---.
.---. .---. .---.
| | | | | |
.---. .---. .---. |
Here, the number in the corner is the number of things engaged to that target. Or, the legend for the numbers could simply indicate it:
1. A chith (melee, engaged by 2 other opponents)
etc. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

Ah, I see.
A+. I really look forward to trying this engagement system out.
