So I've been playing a few MUDs on OS X via MudWalker, and for some reason Haelrahv is the only one that gives me a specific kind of issue with it (which sucks since I kinda like MudWalker the most as of right now).

So the problem is that, past the login stuff, all the text that isn't highlighted doesn't show up. if i make the background semi-transparent, it does show up though, which is really odd. this only happens in haelrahv.

granted, if this is some huge thing to figure out, i don't mind still looking for other front ends/wishing i could figure out how to get Avalon/YASSE to work for Haelrahv, but if it's an easy problem to solve i'd love to be able to still use MudWalker.

I can only assume that because this is a Mac client, some characters we may embed in text aren't liked by the client and it handles them poorly. We use some standard escape codes and such (ascii 13 for a carriage return, etc.) that the client would receive and perhaps doesn't understand and thus kills any text it exists in and/or successive text.

the text is there, but when i have the background set as black and the text set as white, i can't see anything unless i highlight it. but when i have the text set as white, the background set as white, and the opacity on the background set at 50%, the background shows up as greyish and i can see the white text. it's really odd.

just the fact that it's a thing i've only experienced in HR (every other MUD I randomly test seems to work fine) made me wonder if it was fixable.

it feels like, when the in game text isn't set to a specific color/background, it's processing them both as the same color (or something?). i say that because the text shows up great when it has a set color and background, but when it's default it feels like it is making them both go by what the background color is.

I still have to blame embedded characters, but I don't know which or why it would be handled in that way. It actually sounds like a programming error in the client to me. If the client is maintained regulary (ala MUSHclient, etc.) you might want to report the problem.

as a minor update, i noticed today my other account for HR had things showing up fine, so i compared the settings of the two.

it seems that ANSI being on was what was screwing stuff up. so ANSI is now off. not perfect but now it works.

Very interesting. I'd say our implementation of ANSI has to be non-standard in that case, but that seems unusual since I'm not aware of any deviations. It could be that it doesn't like a couple of the codes that are used for text placement rather than color.

I've had ANSI related problems in HR on almost every OS X front end I've tried (that didn't just outright crash/freeze/etc). I know in Cantrip when a background color started, it never ended up stopping until another background color began.

That said, I'm totally fine with keeping ANSI off.

I'm not really familiar with Mac's implementation of ANSI, it could be different despite the fact that it's... well... a standard, and shouldn't be different. Or it could be something with how we display it that Mac's don't like. Either way, yeah, I'd say the best option is to turn ANSI off.

I actually wonder if Mac just doesn't support the 'clear' code. In ANSI you can negate any prior foreground or background color change (note: these are different, foreground has nothing to do with the background set) with a code because you can't assume everyone has a black background, for instance, and use that to revert to the 'original color'. It's possible the Mac FE's don't handle this clear code properly and thus in the one client it was ignored and background seemed to never reset.
