I voted for (and why)
The Great Wall (can be seen from space!)
Pyramids of Giza (2600 BC!)
Eifel Tower (nothing else like it and people all over the world recognize it just by its picture)
Statue of Liberty (symbolic and people all over the world recognize it just by its picture)
Taj Mahal (beautiful and people all over the world recognize it just by its picture)
Stonehenge (still a mystery)
Colosseum (the first of its kind and what all others are based on) _________________

I'll be the sourpuss here... is there a page I missed while browsing the site that explains why the traditional seven wonders just don't cut the mustard anymore? _________________ Mickey Brunner

Because only one of them still exists apparently. The pyramids. _________________ Arden [hr-arden@haelrahv.com]

I never thought it was impossible (or that part of it was a mystery), but why was it built? Many theories, no answers. Still a mystery. _________________

As much as I think all those are great, they aren't my pick for the 7 wonders.
Not on the list but I chose:
The birth of a child.
The Grand Canyon.
Mountains.
Oceans.
Evolution.
The freaky resilience of the human race.
Oh and that Trevor puts up with us and our surveys.

See, the cynic in me says that oceans, birth and evolution aren't really all that special for a list because if we didn't have them we wouldn't be alive or aware of their value to us.
And as Mickey said, the prior wonders such as the colossus and the hanging gardens don't exist anymore, sadly. Even if they did, I think a new list is cool (not to make the original list seem inferior, think of it as just a list of modern wonders) but if that were the case much of the entries in this list would have to go (pyramids, stonehenge, etc.) to be replaced with stuff like the golden gate bridge, the panama canal, the empire state building, etc. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

Pretty much anything can be seen from space with our nifty reconaissance satellites.
But if you meant seen unaided from space, no it can't. That "fact" was first popularized when Yuri Gagarin was all of 4 years old. _________________ ** The phrase "break a leg" just wasn't ambitious enough for Mellie Knight. [8:31 pm]

You say it can't - the information given by the website says it can. Who should we believe - the guy who has confirmed his pessimism repeatedly or the architectural experts who supplied the likely heavily researched information contained on the site?

The website states that they (the panel of leading architectural experts) have narrowed the original 100s of locations down to 21 - the Golden Gate Bridge, etc., were probably all on that original list. _________________

Sorry, but fortunately being (justifiedly) pessimistic isn't the same as being ignorant.
Some people should have researched just a tad harder.

Interesting discussion. For my part, I'd have to say that from our vantage point as modern humans we're not really fit to see what "modern" wonders are. I feel that without the test of time, it's just a lot of hubristic patting eachother on the back type of stuff. I'm not saying that modern architectual structures... like the Golden Gate Bridge aren't awe-inspiring and super-cool and the like.. I just don't think that future civiliazation will be put into a similar state of awe at our ability to construct them. I'd say a concept more like the internet would fit that particular bill. Especially given the fact that it was created without slave labor, or direct fatalities. _________________ Behind every optic is a mathematic. |

I'm on point with you on all above quoted-ness. _________________ Mickey Brunner
