Not to set off another argument, but droids are money eaters. Each new 'better' item goes up several thousand dollars.

Just to give you a small list of costs. And these are rounded. 100k for bare droid. 50k for starter junk to make it move and follow you. 100k to buy all the stuff to give bonuses. So. A MAD costs about 250k at first.

I actually sat here and added up all the parts upgrades I did at the Vale (I'm at work, I'm suppose to goof off!)

The total I spent on my droid all together is almost a million dollars. XD

So...they're a tad more than just some initial monies.

since you tend to really want kit to play with giant machines and so on, as opposed to comm chips and other trivialities

Kit's an inventor, not a repair man. If he's gotta whack dents outta his limbs and droid, so be it. He's rather be working on FF7 Advent Children-esque blade gun motorcycles.

As for maintenance...I'm not opposed to it. It makes sense too. It just seems like it would be overly annoying to constantly have to tweak drones to get viruses out of them.

Yaru, your original post was about computer viruses, not so much about tinkerings or banging out dents. I STILL don't think computer viruses in droids is completely needed.

in fairness, having a mobile bonus factory that also carries stuff is rather worth the million it takes to buy. Razz considering that most alteration-related bonus stuff takes $50k+ per point, i don't think that droids are anything but very appealing when it comes to what they grant.

fair enough, but it isn't like other technologies aren't dealing with the same thing. as far as i know, droids are one of the more complicated machines that techs deal with (some chips may require more skill to install but generally droids, in terms of what they do, are the most robust of any technology out there).

i also have no clue as to what would be fair in terms of how often to maintain them. that's something that's more a numbers issue that i feel a GM would have to settle on. i just throw the idea that something maintinence-related should be done.

i think that's more a semantics issue, though. the droid is a big computer. big computers can have bugs/errors/virii/whatever in them just as much as they can be thrown down a flight of stairs and need some repairing.

what i wanted to suggest was that, be it hardware of software related, a droid should require a tech to take care of it, just like medics need to take care of their tech equipment and 'crats need to take care of their tech equipment, and comm users need to take care of their equipment... and so on.

<slaps soundless silly for his use of the term 'virii'>

I'm only going to respond to the pertinent point of this topic.

No, droids will not get viruses. Droids will later on have to have certain parts repaired at times, otherwise they'll break down and potentially cause other parts to wear down or break, and your whole droid's innards could become a pretty big mess. Never know, those nuclear power cores might just explode. Razz
