Those types of emails aren't really from who they say they are. It's just an attempt to steal your Paypal account information.

I keep getting similar ones for some bank I don't hold an account with. I just forward them on to the actual bank to track, and suggest you do the same with the fraud Paypal ones.

When you receive these emails, the link you see in the mail is not where that link really leads. For instance, I recently got an email supposedly from PayPal that said the link went to https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run however, it actually goes to http://www.co-op.or.kr/.paypal-account/ which is a link on a korean webserver that will be dressed up as PayPal and will make you think you're updating info, when you're really giving your info to a stranger.

Simply put, PayPal has never asked members to log in an update their info, they never threaten to close accounts if info isn't updated by X date, and if they did need you to visit for some reason, they'd advise you to visit by means others than clicking a link within an email as this forgery is a well known tactic used by phishers.

With Paypal and I am sure it applies to any business.. Go to the site directly eg: www.paypal.com and do your business there.

I made the post here because of how many of us use paypal. I was almost fooled because it appeared very real. I wanted to be sure that people new and old were aware BEFORE they were misled. I won't assume that the whole word is wise to every trick in the con book.

On another note.. I had set up a yahoo email for my father so I was checking the mails maintaining it for the first bit. He started getting emails from Capital one about his bank account. Now I worked for him so I knew he did not have one. But I could envision him (or anyone new to "the ways of the net") getting that from a bank that they have an account with and being taken advantage of.

People do not have to be stupid fools in order to be conned. Some people are very good at being dishonest. People who fall for it are not automatically dumb idiots and should not be treated as such.
