They told her that you HAVE to hold it thier way for some lame ass reason. So needless to say I hold a pen appropriately now. Least according to the Iowa school system.

Being ambidextrous and growing up in the unenlightened years I did sucked at times. I actually got in trouble in kindergarten for writing with my left hand. My teacher told me since I could write with my right, if she saw me writing with my left she would put me in the corner. Crazy. My mother set her straight though. Cool

Yes my sister is left-handed and she would get reprimanded for writing with her left till my mother stepped in aswell. Go Moms!

And I start my circles at 10 o clock

Why are teachers so anti-left-handedness? I mean, it's not really their place to dictate which hand you write with. If anything, that should be up to the parents and the kids.

Is it just because they're too lazy to learn how to teach someone an alternate method of writing?

--William

[Edit:] As far as I can remember, the teachers down here didn't really care. We had "pair pros" teamed up with our elementary teachers and they would help those kids that deviated from the rest of us. So, if you were left handed, they would help you out while the teacher worked with us righties.

well you have to think of the generation, there was still very strict ideas of what was proper and such. Hell there was still corporal punishment

I was either supposed to be left handed, or ambidextrious. My circles are right handed, clockwise, because my teacher taught me it was so. Also, I start at 12. My handwriting sucks, beyond belief, and quite frankly, I think of my left hand as my dominant hand. Except that it's not really. Neither hand is dominant.

It was funny, a couple weeks ago, I didn't have a pen in my english class, so I asked if I could borrow a pen. Two people handed me pens at the same time, so I took both. I had a 4 page essay that was due at the end of the class, so I decided to have fun, since I had time. One pen was blue gel, the other was black ball point. I used the blue pen with my right hand, and the black pen with my left, and I alternated every other word. The left handed ones surprisingly didn't come out too bad. Everyone in the class just stared at me when they saw my paper. (Actually, one girl saw it, and had to show everyone I was a freak. Yay.)

It used to be believed that almost anything unusual was a peversion and indicated a problem with that person. This includes left-handed righting which was specifically targeted as such an "unnatural act".

Left-handed righting was at one point one of many such "acts" that would be factored into a decision to try to "correct" this person by "treatments" such as shock therapy, lobotomies, or simply sterilizing them so that they could not produce children who might share their traits.

It's hard to believe, and it was in the 20th century, to boot. But it's true.

i missed the beginning of this thread but i can add my left /right handedness to your theories.
i wrote with my left hand from right hand side of the page to left hand side of the page . i did this till i reached middle school 4-8 years old . at middle school i was taught to favor my right hand result awful handwriting and writing my letters back to front but writing from left hand page to the right hand side.
as an adult i favor my right hand but can write just as neatly with my left hand and also can compose two pieces of written work at the same time using both hands as long as the written work is exactly the same in details.

i drew the circle
cw with my right hand
ccw with my left hand Twisted Evil

now hopefully that should have really messed up your theories Wink

oh an FYI i can also hold a pencil between my big toe and second big toe and draw a scrawled smiley face Twisted Evil
