Would you prefer the 'patch notes' style of updates over an extensive use of NEWS? |
Yes, much better. |

I would prefer everything to be in NEWS even if it's hundreds of articles. |

I'd like everyone's feedback on something I'm contemplating doing. What I'm pondering is a different way to release information on what's been updated in the game recently instead of throwing it all in news articles. Many products (incl. games) use patch/version notes to list changes. I'm consdering doing something like this:
Code: |
[01.20.05]
Combat:
- Widgets and flying saucers will now inflict more damage.
- Chith oracles will be absent for a few days as they attend a convention of evil minions.
Foraging:
- Londrum will no longer explode on contact.
[01.19.05]
Magic:
- The summon frisbee spell has been released. |
This would be available on the website somewhere. Maybe in game too, but it would be less useful in game due to the scroll. We would still use NEWS for the really important stuff, but most of the updates to the game would not be listed in NEWS any more.
BTW, I recognize we need a better NEWS system anyway, with things like categorized news, that will happen eventually regardless of whether we go with this note system or not. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

I <3 release notes and change logs and all that other stuff, so I definitely think that this would be cool to have. |

I think it's a good idea, especially if you keep some kind of news archive with the notes somewhere. There have been times I've looked for old news articles only to find they no longer exist hehe. _________________ It is better to be pissed off than pissed on. |

I voted pro-patch-version. It'd be nice to have everything bunched together by dates instead of having ten random news articles updated (which makes it a little harder to remember where everything is). You then run into a problem with remembering specific dates, but that's fixed with a CTRL+F since you're going to put it up on the site as well.

Yeah, if we go with the patch notes style of updating, we should be able to keep an indefinite amount of archives of those notes. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

I like the idea of having everything we DO have in the NEWS as it is now. But I also thing that we should have the news (esspecially announements! I hate when they don't go into the news!) archived on the site. I picked the way it now...with hopes of an archive elsewhere. _________________ "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- Adam Savage

It's an either/or sort of thing. I'm not going to ask the staff to update two different files for all the updates they put in. If we go with the patch style, only the most critical news would go in NEWS - primarily announcements of events, policies, etc... the kind of things that aren't new/updated content. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

i like the big and small things being updated because i like hearing stuff is done at all.
heck, with all the updates we've gotten this week, i've felt like the game is improving by the day. i like that whole desire to read over what improved while i was away. _________________ A bright-eyed Thekko Ku Kalla dressed in a dapper sailor suit takes to flight and careers through the air toward the Modan Kucho and slams into him!

So, with this patch-by-day update deal include some of the Announcements that tend to stay on their own? Like when the table system came out, Rikiar was making announcements on all of the updates but not adding them to any news item. Not that I'm complaining, Rikiar, but it'd be nice if these things could be compiled somewhere for those that aren't logged in at the time.

PS: ..Yes, even though I was sitting here posting them as you made them, heh. _________________
