As promised, my desktop:
http://abs.gprime.net/desktop2.JPG
It's basically the same as my laptop, save for the Litestep theme. The buttons on the bottom left are: start menu (and litestep menu, if right clicked), some random stuff, Windows Explorer, Networks (I can't get the question mark to go away, argh), Internet Explorer (and Opera, if right clicked), and Trillian.
If anyone was curious to know what the icons in my laptop's quicklaunch bar were for: show desktop, internet explorer, opera, musicmatch jukebox, trillian, journal viewer, quicknote, windows explorer, tweak xp, calculator, bearshare, kazaa lite++, semagic (woot for livejournal), [some dvd ripping program whose name I forget], dvd shrink (for taking out useless dvd stuff, like spanish subtitles and dubs), winISO, and [some program that I've suddenly forgotten].
Huzzah. A succesful and underailed thread.

Alienware 4 life! I got mine right before they changed to the new towers (and even more expensive stuff). It's cool that I buy an expensive computer and then play text games on it.

I totally used to have that background on my laptop, except it only had the フリケリ part, not the "furi kuri" or "flcl" stuff. Man, that was a good show. Oh, yeah, and that's a good Winamp skin. Too bad foobar2k is way better than winamp.
I never really messed with Litestep. It looked kinda fun, though. And your taskbar thing looks just like Linux's. |

This is one of my favorite. It's a combination of an XP style called Aluminum Alloy from deviantART and one of Ingalil's themes called Android Dreams. I even found a Trillian Skin to match - Luna Metallika.
I really like things that match well and use non-bright colors (excluding white). I don't like glaring red, green, blue, etc. on my screen. It's distracting to me.

As you can see, I'm always rather spartan with what I have on my desktop, but I keep all the really important things here:

and here:

NOTE: SGE is going away as soon as I get rid of the rest of my stuff...almost gone, yay me!
Other programs here:
http://www.geocities.com/faithtempest/images/desk4.jpg
include (but aren't limited to) such things as Family Tree Maker (I'm odd, I find genealogy fascinating), Now You're Cooking (gotta have someplace to keep my recipes), Quicken, Macromedia MX, Microsoft Office, Visual Studio, Paint Shop Pro, Kazaa Lite, Angry IP Scanner, Core FTP, WinAMP and Baldur's Gate.
However, my most used programs are Trillian, IE, Wizard/GoPlay!, MySQL and TextPad. For anyone who does any type of programming, I wholeheartedly recommend TextPad. It is awesome. _________________ Counselor Faith Tempest

Score for Baldur's Gate.
I wish I could see why people like minimal amounts of icons on their desktops. To me, it's easier to have the most used programs there instead of within a roll-up menu. Well, at least I'm not like my dad, who likes to keep every single program on his computer shortcutted on his desktop. I honestly don't see how he can find anything.

I never realized that. Har. I need to find a new theme, though. This one does get a little old after awhile.

That is incredible to me...it's not as much a factor now as it used to be, but every icon on the desktop is resources taken..I used to get calls from people all the time who had resource issues and their desktop looked like it had every program on their pc on it _________________ Dregonard Lefear offers a voodoo shrunken Arakaweii head to you.

Well, I've got the dock to take the place of icons. Icons just aren't that aesthetically pleasing. |

For me, it's because I've normally got my entire screen covered with many running programs (sometimes multiple instances of the Wizard, TextPad, SQL, etc., and instead of minimizing things to click an icon, I just hit that roll-up menu.

Honestly, with as many full screen programs as I have, it's easier to have my shortcuts on the taskbar as opposed to on my desktop. _________________ A bright-eyed Thekko Ku Kalla dressed in a dapper sailor suit takes to flight and careers through the air toward the Modan Kucho and slams into him!

For the same reason people like to have their house neatly organized so that they can find things and don't have to trip all over junk lying around to get what they want. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

Mine's here, but I rarely see it while doing anything other than starting/exiting a full-screen game, since I use Quick Launch for most things.
At an earlier time I also did red, blue, and green themes, but I only remembered to transfer the blue one to this computer. |
