If you could play a commoner (non-profession character), would you? Commoners would have no profession bonuses or other bonuses, but may have off the wall titles, etc. |
Not at all. |

I might dabble, but I doubt I'd play one seriously. |

I think they should keep their skills/stats if they decide to join a profession, but not automatically being leveled up in their new profession to their current "commoner" level. Instead they should start at level 1 with reguard to learning guild abilities. Sure their skills will be high for their circle, but they won't be particularly high for time spent IG. _________________ ~Hunter~ |

To counter that, why lose levels? _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

Lets say there's a 50th level commoner, "Ed the fisherman" then he walk into the mage profession hall and decides to become a mage. All of a sudden he's a 50th mage? That doesn't sit right with me. I don't have a problem keeping skills and stats, but when you join a brand new profession, you know nothing about it, why jump a ton of levels and be some master of a profession you've only belonged to for 10 minutes. _________________ ~Hunter~

Perhaps another solution would be Joe the Fisherman's level is based on how many times he has double-trained certain skills. So if he has say possibly 80 spell casting, 80 spell research, 80 research, for example, he can join as a level 40 mage and lose the excess experience. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

Because it takes just as much work to become a 50th level commoner as it does to become a 50th level mage, maybe moreso with out any of the profession bonuses. _________________ "I'm not quiet...I'm plotting" |

This is one of those realism vs. gameplay issues. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

I believe that you should definitely become a first level character of what ever guild you join, and then circle according to your skills, but just not lose all of the experience you had gained before. Or any skills you have already trained in your guild, if they are guild specific, but maybe, limit the number of levels you can go up in a day/week/ etc. |

(Run! It's that phrase again!) In DR, the one advantage Commoners had over guilded characters was the fact that they were considered to be secondary in all skill sets. I regularly had my characters spend a week or two as a commoner in order to work on skills that they would be tert in after they joined a guild. Before I created my last DR character, I had it set in my head that my Moon Mage would be a combat freak. I spent about three or four weeks getting his four armor skills and 10 weapons (yes, I was insane) to 20 ranks or so while he was secondary in everything before joining the guild. I wouldn't have done that if I knew I would lose all of that experience after having Kssarh chew me out about how I'm going to fail as a magi.
If you implement Commoners and don't give them any advantages over characters declared in a profession, at least allow them to keep all of their experience and skills that they trained while being one when they do join a profession. _________________ Help! Help! I'm being oppressed! |
