Ok, so Bureaucrats (and others) are supposed to have some special consideration when it comes to critters running away from them. I personally don't think it's enough.
I have 200 weapon skill, maxed evasion and parry for my level, and fairly good (but not maxed) stats. I try to keep my encumbrance down to minimally although it creeps up to slightly as I pick up skins. I also unfortunately have the Accident Prone flaw but I still manage to get my balance up to well.
I've tried hunting kashagas (60), nowbis, getok hounds (70), and vacoris (70). All of them run away from me even though all of them have also killed me. Ok, I haven't had a hound run away yet, but it's the same level as the vacori so I assume it does.
I've also tried hunting Modan Kuchos which haven't run away yet, but it's very dangerous to hunt that close to level for a non-combat profession. They're just as likely to kill me. Plus not as appealing since they're neutral and don't spawn often.
I realize that last part can't be helped until there are more high level critters. But even if they came out today, I wouldn't be able to hunt anything that doesn't run away without it having a serious chance of killing me.
I'm not asking to be able to overhunt in safety like some professions. But I'd like to be able to hunt something that doesn't run away from me without dying several times a day. _________________ ** The phrase "break a leg" just wasn't ambitious enough for Mellie Knight. [8:31 pm]

Well seriously, what I'd like to see is something more like:
Code: |
Combat skill (some invisible rating) = f(stats, skills, traits/flaws, possibly profession) |
If your combat skill is too far over a critter's, then it runs away. It doesn't make much sense for it to be based on level. _________________ ** The phrase "break a leg" just wasn't ambitious enough for Mellie Knight. [8:31 pm]

I'm planning on redoing this whole thing, and making it skill based. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

I'm sort of of the same mind. Given I underhunt already, but after the fix to natural weapon attacks, Dante is kind of in limbo. Borkin hunters run from him, but berserkers and borkin warriors hit him far too easily for still being below his level by about 4 levels. To add to that, I think Psionics get a penalty so creatures run away sooner (though I'm not sure why as our defenses suck) as well.
And considering that Dante has some scary natural resistances even before taking his armor into account, the attacks that get through hit much too hard. One swipe took out half my HP and a second nearly killed me. _________________ Help! Help! I'm being oppressed! |

Ok, good to hear. I just had an odd thought that Intimidation should factor into it, but that would definitely make my situation worse....
But could you make it a little easier on us for now? In a few levels I'll be scaring away even Kuchos, the highest generally huntable critter. _________________ ** The phrase "break a leg" just wasn't ambitious enough for Mellie Knight. [8:31 pm]

I don't know what level they are. I was just going off the info on Gabriel's site. _________________ ** The phrase "break a leg" just wasn't ambitious enough for Mellie Knight. [8:31 pm]

The champions are higher but the Echak stuff aren't a good benchmark to gauge by, because they're developed to fighter dirtier, like players. _________________ Mickey Brunner

[09.21.04] The mechanics that determine when a NPC will flee from combat have been dramatically altered. These mechanics are now based on skills and stats, and generally players will find that things flee significantly less unless the player is incredibly more powerful than the NPC. Hidden or invisible players will no longer cause NPC's to flee, nor will any player who is less than level 10. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

Does anyone have any feedback on this change so far? Better, worse, neither? _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

William's not all that scary, so I have no input.

Well... I went hunting earlier today. Kashagas (20+ levels under me) weren't running away. But they didn't seem to be doing anything else either besides spawning. _________________ ** The phrase "break a leg" just wasn't ambitious enough for Mellie Knight. [8:31 pm]

Yeah, I just fixed this. I overwrote some code with the wrong stuff and all combat NPC's were doing absolutely nothing. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato
