How detailed are craftmen going to be able to make things?
Do you feel comfortable giving an example of what a craft would entail and what the end result would look like? |

With enough skill, craftsman should be able to create some fairly detailed items. It’s not coded yet, so I can't give you a spiffy walkthrough, but I can tell you how it’s planned out. I'll use woodcarving as an example....
First you’ll have to carve out the initial shape, there will be a list of items you can choose from for shapes. So lets say you want to make an amulet, you'll simply WHITTLE AMULET FROM BLOCK with the necessary tool. Once this is completed, you can stop there in the process (which would result in a crude amulet) or you can go on to add finish and/or detail.
Finishing allows you to add some color to your object and also adds to the TAP. If you'd like a darkly-stained amulet, you would then finish your piece with dark stain and ta da!
Detailing will also work off a list of choices and will add a LOOK to your item. Each descriptor you choose off the list will require a separate carve, each progressively harder. So let's say you'd like your amulet to show "Two moons against a starry sky.", you would carve out the above in succession “Two”, then “moons” etc.
Finishing and detailing are interchangeable, so if you detail a piece and then decide to add a finish, it won’t ruin your design. On the flip side, both detailing and finishing are not required steps, only the shaping part is necessary. Also part of finishing is sanding, which will work like an eraser; so if you don’t like the stain or even the detail you just added, it can be removed. I want craftsman to be able to make diverse items, with as much or as little detail as they desire
That’s about it for now…any questions or comments?

How would people begin/add to their detail lists? |

Well, I was thinking of having a general list that was available to everyone, which I would periodically add to. Different images would vary in difficulty...the most difficult part being stringing them together.
But you bring up an interesting idea Perhaps people could start get a beginning list of random descriptors, and as they go up in skill, their list would be added to at certain levels.
Which would you rather see? The general list or the random list?

Or, one could specialize in certain genres of design.. creatures, races, lettering, etc... and start out with those mainly and then learn more as their skill improves.
Just an idea, and not a well thought out one. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

I'd root for the random list myself, looking forward to this as a hobby when not busy with Droids and stuff.

I, personally, don't really enjoy the whole random situation. Sure, all Craftsmen should get a few things randomly (like a moon, constellation, or any other design) when they pop into the world, but there should still be some regulation to it all. I don't think I'm going to be able to explain this right, so bare with me, please.
Number one, I'd like to see race-specific designs. This can easily be explained due to religion, culture, or any other reason you can think up. I wouldn't think there'd be all that many race-specifics to where it'd be hard to think up anything that everyone as a whole could do, but just put few scattered here and there and I'll be happy. Of course, though, if you don't want to make anything race-specific, you could give each of the races a bonus in crafting a certain design (Jadda forming something into the Jaddan moon, for example.. or an Alteri sculpting one of their godesses.. or even a Human making a crucifix/pentagram/whatever, if you want to go that far into it).
Number two, I don't know if you've already thought of this, but you shouldn't just *get* a design. Yeah, you should get a few everytime you level and all that.. with experience comes wisdom and all that.. but you should also have to travel around to get Design A and Design B. Like.. if you wanted to depict the Titan City Arena, I don't think you'd do it justice if you just tried to do it willy-nilly without even seeing it first. Same goes for the City of Abbindolare.. I really doubt you could depict that without seeing it first.
Number three, I'd really like to see a kind of teaching system for the non-racial-specific (if those'll exist instead of the the bonuses). It'd be like a drawing class .. you see there and draw the city of Abbindolare, for example, and your student(s) will copy your motions and all that. This could be done several times repetedly, and would require some form of paper/canvas/clay/stone/whatever and a tool to do the actual work (pencil, brush, chisel.. or just your hands for clay, I guess).
That's about it for now.. aren't you happy?

Hm.. Choose a certain area to specialize in, then gain more patterns and such of that type with more skill. Have to learn region-specific ones by traveling around, and then there's NPCs (or other things) that can teach additional basic designs. |

Green with a white cross? What.. in the hell? I think that's kind of backwards.. white with a green cross, but anyway.
You could always do a gold-leaf caduceus on a silver background, similar to the needle-point my great grandma did for my granddad when he finished medical school.
